Mark R. Schwehn ’67, Ph.D., and his wife, Dorothy C. Bass, Ph.D., moved to Valparaiso in 1983 when Mark was offered the opportunity to teach in Christ College — The Honors College. He went on to serve as Dean of Christ College from 1990 to 2003 and Provost from 2009 to 2014.

Dorothy directs the Valparaiso Project on the Education and Formation of People in Faith, a Lilly Endowment project that develops resources to help contemporary people live the Christian faith with vitality and integrity in changing times.

In gratitude for Mark’s Valpo education and the joy their affiliation with the University has brought them over the years, the couple has made a deferred gift commitment through their estate. In addition, they have established several charitable gift annuities with the University.

“Dorothy and I have found gift annuities to be a wonderful way to support Valpo,” Mark says. “They provide payments during life, which we are gifting to Valpo, and the remaining funds benefit the programs that are important to us.”

Mark and Dorothy both have a deep sense of loyalty to the University and its mission. Dorothy concludes, “I have learned over the years that there are so many people here who work so hard, and we would like to support their efforts so they have permanent resources to continue their good work.”
