John R. Steffen ’66 and Marolyn Steffen ’68 |
John “Jack” R. Steffen ’66 and Marolyn (Bockhorn) Steffen ’68 met at Valparaiso University and have been married for 54 years. The list of their relatives who are also Valpo grads is extensive. A partial list includes Marolyn’s twin sister, Jack’s brother and his wife, and the Steffens’ son, Michael. After earning her degree in home economics, Marolyn became a registered dietician and built a successful consulting dietitian company. After earning his Ph.D., Jack joined the Valpo faculty as a professor of mechanical engineering. And the rest, they say, is history!
In gratitude for all the ways that they and their family members have benefited from their connections to the University, the couple has established both the John and Marolyn Steffen Endowed Scholarship Fund and the John and Marolyn Steffen Faculty Development Award in support of student scholarships and special projects within the College of Engineering.
“We realize Valpo is an exceptional higher education institution that provides a wide variety of opportunities for students to grow academically, spiritually, and socially,” they say. “Grants, scholarships, and student aide employment assisted with our educations, and we would very much like to assist future students and their families by lightening the financial commitment of attending Valpo.”
The Steffens say their desire to see Valpo continue to thrive and provide a caring and academically challenging environment was motivation for their decision to support the University in the future. They believe alumni who appreciate the education and overall experience that they enjoyed as students should strive to make the Valpo experience available to future students.
“We have been richly blessed through the years,” they conclude. “We feel it is important that we give back and support the institutions and nonprofits that have enriched our lives.”
